Liberal Arts Education Benefits

Pursuing a degree in the liberal arts helps you succeed in a fast-paced world that requires individuals to develop creative solutions today to solve the complex challenges of the future.

Although they’re well-equipped for many different roles, liberal arts majors may have a less clear-cut road to the perfect job than some graduates. Ranstrom had several suggestions for liberal arts majors entering the job market.

  • Diversify Your Skill Set – Research done by Payscale has shown that business and computer science majors tend to make more in the initial phase of their careers due to their technical skills, but that liberal arts majors catch up and can surpass some of their counterparts over the course of their careers. Obtaining some technical skills can allow liberal arts graduates to help close that gap in the earlier years of their careers.
  • Build Your Personal Brand – Liberal arts students are adept at storytelling and communicating complex ideas. When it’s time to enter the job market they need to harness those skills to tell their own story. Establishing a personal brand is important. Ranstrom offered an example: «A graduate with a history degree applying for a Fortune 500 company may not immediately make as much sense to a hiring manager as a business or accounting major, but that does not mean that there isn’t value in what the history major can provide. It’s about creating a personal branding website, portfolio and cover letter that connects the dots for the hiring manager and showcases not only the history major’s strengths, but also his or her commitment and excitement to the organization’s mission.»
  • Think Outside the Box – Ranstrom said that liberal arts majors should be flexible and creative as they start to explore the job market. «If they think too narrowly about the application of their degree in the workforce, they will see lower pay and higher competition (i.e. the English major trying to break into publishing); however, if they are willing to explore different industries and organizations, acquiring skills, contacts, and experiences along the way, they will find a way to merge all of their areas of interests and strengths in a more compelling and fulfilling career,» Ranstrom said. Adaptability and an open mind will serve liberal arts majors well in the job market.

Extracurricular Opportunities at LACs

Interest Groups

Because LACs are smaller and have fewer resources than large research universities, you’ll likely find fewer student organizations and clubs, and the ones that do exist are more oriented toward on-campus life and building community than career societies. Instead, there may well be club sports and other clubs that celebrate shared passions and interests.

Athletics

Elite athletic programs aren’t a feature of many LACs. Most play in the NCAA Division III. However, that doesn’t mean athletics aren’t a large part of the culture. Smaller student bodies with Division III teams and club teams mean a greater percentage of the student population tend to participate. For some schools, particularly those in the NESCAC, there are large alumni networks revolving around the sports culture.

Outdoor Opportunities

Since many liberal arts colleges are located in rural areas, it’s no surprise that there’s a great deal of interest in environmentalism, sustainability, and outdoor activities. For example, there’s an abundance of mountain clubs that organize activities like hiking, backpacking trips, ski trips, and so on.

Of the eight schools in the U.S. that have achieved campus carbon neutrality, four are members of the NESCAC: Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, Bates College, and Colby College. Two of the remaining carbon neutral schools, Colgate University and Colorado College, are also liberal arts colleges.

Study Abroad

Study abroad is enormously popular at many schools, especially liberal arts colleges. In fact, a majority of students at LACs study abroad as undergraduates. For example, at Pitzer College, 78% of students in the Class of 2014 studied abroad, compared with about 10% nationally. Goucher College has even made study abroad mandatory for undergraduates, while other schools have done so for certain degrees and tracks.

Best Liberal Arts Colleges

The element that determines a liberal arts education is not necessarily the major, but rather the institution.

Liberal arts colleges tend to be small, private institutions with low teacher-to-student ratios, and especially in the United States, much higher price tags than other four-year colleges and universities. However, they rarely teach single-minded expertise on one subject and often feature robust general education requirements. This higher education model provides students with a well-rounded education and a strong moral compass. Successful liberal arts institutions should produce students well-trained in soft and hard sciences, mathematics, and humanities, making the price worthwhile.

According to data from , the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education, and US News and World Report, the following schools are consistently ranked as the best liberal arts colleges in the United States:

  • Williams College (Berkshires, Massachusetts): Williams College requires students to take three courses in three different fields of study: arts and humanities, social sciences, and science and mathematics. There are no required courses, but all students must demonstrate strong skills in writing, reasoning, and mathematics before earning a degree. Williams is one of the highest producers of both Fulbright and Rhodes Scholars.
  • Amherst College (Amherst, Massachusetts): Amherst College features an open course plan, which allows students to choose the courses they are most interested in. Amherst has no required core curriculum. Students can choose between 40 majors, or they can design their own major.
  • Swarthmore College (Swarthmore, Pennsylvania): Swarthmore is based on a Quaker tradition, emphasizing strong relationships between teachers, students, peers, and the environment. At 8:1, the student-to-teacher ratio is low, and Swarthmore is one of the top producers of Fulbright Scholars in the U.S. Swarthmore offers an engineering degree, unlike most liberal arts colleges.

Pomona College (Claremont, California): Just an hour away from Los Angeles, Claremont College offers 48 different majors and over 600 courses, with a low 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Claremont offers admission to all students regardless of their ability to pay tuition and offers complete financial aid to meet the demonstrated need of every admitted student.

Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine): Bowdoin College focuses on need-blind admissions, diversity, and social responsibility while fostering independent thought. More than half of Bowdoin students complete additional honors and summer coursework, and a majority of students produce robust independent research before graduating.

Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts): Widely considered to be the top women’s college in the country, Wellesley College features a strong list of alumni, including former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Hillary Rodham Clinton. More than 70 percent of all students participate in internships during their studies and more than half study abroad.

Bates College (Lewiston, Maine): Bates College requires first-year freshman to take an orientation course together during the first semester to develop a strong foundation of scholarship and community. The low student-to-teacher ratio emphasizes this foundation, as does the strong sense of community outreach and annual volunteer efforts. In 2017, the college was ranked number one for Fulbright recipients.

Davidson College (Davidson, North Carolina): Located just north of Charlotte, Davidson College has produced 23 Rhodes Scholars and 86 Fulbright Scholars. More than 80 percent of the student body study or work abroad during their tenure and just under 25 percent of students also participate in athletics.

Wesleyan University (Middletown, Connecticut): Wesleyan provides students with the option of open curriculum, where they determine the courses they are most interested in taking, as well as pre-planned majors with emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, in true liberal arts fashion. The university also offers need-blind admission and features a low 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Smith College (Northhampton, Massachusetts): As an all women’s college, Smith stands out by consistently ranking among the best liberal arts colleges in the U.S. It offers nearly 1.000 courses in 50 different fields of study and sends half of its student to study abroad annually. It is ranked every year as one of the highest producers of Fulbright Scholars.

Campus Life at Liberal Arts Colleges

In contrast with large research universities in cities, where many students participate in activities and socialize off campus, LACs typically offer a self-contained campus experience. Part of this is because they are often in suburban or rural areas. They also tend to be residential, with all or nearly all students living on campus, fostering community.

Many LACs don’t have Greek life; they are more focused on emphasizing overall community extending through the entire campus. For some, this and the fact that there is usually a small student body could make the community feel tight-knit; others may feel constricted and find it cliquey.

What do liberal arts majors learn?

A better question would be: What won’t you learn? One of the benefits of a liberal arts education is the chance to explore multiple areas of interest. You’ll also acquire the skills you’ll need for lifelong learning—like research writing and communication.

Says Victoria McGillin, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Linfield College in Oregon: “Our learn to read materials closely meaningfully analyze problems apply systematic approaches to the resolution of those problems and communicate solutions to others.”

David Kogler, associate director of admission at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota gives the following example of this. “Instead of learning only about business at a business school a liberal arts degree will teach you about business as well as the history politics and other areas that influence and shape the world of business.”

Bob Murray dean of enrollment management at Illinois Wesleyan University believes that a liberal arts education is more critical today than ever before. “A liberal arts education develops both the left and right side of the brain. Effective problem solving requires strong analytical and creative processes. Developing critical thinking skills and being able to comprehend various subjects and perspectives adds to the ability of liberal arts graduates to successfully connect the dots between multiple disciplines. Students benefit from being in small interactive classes with highly qualified faculty who teach them to discriminate and constructively challenge what they read see and hear. Learning and experiencing global perspectives enhances their ability to communicate with the highly diverse communities we live in.”

So it’s not only what you learn that’s valuable but also the higher order thinking and communication skills you develop like learning how to adapt to different situations that will ultimately lead to your success.

Liberal Arts.

Should You Attend a Liberal Arts College?

Liberal arts colleges appeal to many students, but they’re not for everyone. Considering attending an LAC? It could be the right choice for you if:

  • You’re looking for a more intimate academic experience and to build relationships with faculty.
  • You think you might want to attend graduate school or pursue a career in academia.
  • You’re a strong writer.
  • Rather than a career-oriented approach, you’d prefer a more theoretical approach to learning.
  • You’re not sure about what major you want to declare.
  • A quintessential college town appeals to you.
  • You’re politically progressive.

If you’re interested in attending an all-female college, consider, too, that a majority of all-women’s colleges are small liberal arts schools, like Barnard, Wellesley College, and Smith College.

On the other hand, an LAC might not be the right choice if:

  • You want to study a professionally-oriented major and pursue research as an undergraduate.
  • You’re on the shyer side and don’t like to speak up in class.
  • You’re not a particularly strong writer.
  • An urban environment appeals to you.
  • You’re hoping to attend a larger school and experience everything it has to offer, like Greek life and elite athletic programs.
  • You’re politically conservative and/or religious.
  • You need the flexibility of attending school part-time.
  • You have substantial financial constraints.
  • A diverse student body is important to you.

Bear in mind, of course, that these characteristics are not 100% true across the board. For example, you’ll find conservative, urban LACs, just as you’ll find liberal, rural research universities. It’s important to carefully research and evaluate each school you’re considering to assess whether it’s the right fit.

List of the Best Liberal Arts Colleges

It can be tough to determine which are the best Liberal Arts Colleges, since they are all focused on providing excellent undergraduate programs in a wide range of subjects. But there are some important things to keep in mind as you consider your options.

First, if you are interested in a specific concentration, look for a Liberal Arts program that includes that as an option. See what the requirements are and whether it meets all of your needs.

Second, check out lists of the Top Liberal Arts Colleges (such as the one below). These rankings are typically based off of important data such as tuition fees, admission rates, graduation rates, class size and program diversity.

And finally, consider the subjective metrics as well. At the end of the day, you know yourself and what is important to you.  Here are some to consider:

  • Reputation
  • Sports teams
  • Religious affiliation
  • Percentage of students in fraternities/sororities
  • Proximity to hometown
  • Friends or relatives who attend / have attended
  • Extracurricular opportunities
  • Dining options
  • How you “feel” on campus

How heavily these things weigh will vary from student to student, but don’t let anyone tell you they don’t matter!

Those who opt for the broad Liberal Arts degree, rather than choosing an area of concentration, may wish to look for jobs with training opportunities.

Navigating LAC Admissions

The admissions process is similar to that of many research universities, although somewhat more contextual and holistic. Adcoms will consider:

Academics and test scores (SAT/ACT and SAT Subject Tests)

Like with top-tier universities, admissions are highly competitive at top-tier LACs. With an acceptance rate of 7% (Fall 2019), Pomona College is consistently the liberal arts college with the lowest acceptance rate in the U.S., but it’s far from the only extremely selective LAC.

Schools are not only looking for a GPA and test scores (many are now test-optional in light of COVID-19) but also a curriculum that shows that you challenge yourself, including many honors and AP courses. Usually, there are no specific requirements in terms of coursework and grades, but, as with any selective school you should show a well-rounded academic profile while still specializing in your area(s) of interest.

Extracurriculars

LACs tend to place higher value on nontraditional activities and accomplishments, in contrast to research universities, which often place high value on leadership- and awards-based extracurriculars. For example, they will certainly take note if you started your own cupcake business, led a restoration effort, or grew a YouTube channel.

Essays

Because many liberal arts colleges are writing and critical thinking-focused, essays play a crucial role in your application. Many require at least two supplemental essays in addition to your Common App essay. This can be of benefit to you, though — your essays can help compensate for holes or flaws in other parts of your application, at least to an extent.

Recommendation letters, alumni interviews, and other holistic factors

These schools are community-based, and adcoms are particularly interested in fit — in other words, how candidates will contribute to the campus. This is a quality that’s difficult to determine from your GPA or test scores. Instead, adcoms will probably pay more attention to subjective elements of your application, such as recommendation letters and interviews. These will supply them with evidence of your character and whether your values and goals align with the school’s

Liberal Arts”?

What do colleges mean by “liberal arts”?

In its broadest of terms, it’s an education that provides an overview of the arts, humanities (the study of the human condition), social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.

Some of the more common majors include: anthropology, communication, English, history, language and linguistics, philosophy, political science, math, psychology and sociology. Unlike the colleges and universities that offer these majors, other Some schools are strictly liberal arts colleges—meaning that all of their majors are considered liberal arts.

“A liberal arts education gives students an opportunity to explore a variety of academic disciplines rather than following a specific rubric of courses that train them for a career” says Cindy Peterson director of admissions at Piedmont College in Georgia. “Employers today are seeking qualified graduates who have a broad base of knowledge whose undergraduate experience has granted them the critical thinking skills and an understanding and appreciation of diversity ethical issues and service to others.”
